Shaad Ali’s has made several movies since his debut with Saathiya in 2002. A prodigy of Mani Ratnam, Ali has generally worked on rom-coms and his first attempt at a real-life story is out today. Soorma is based on the life of former Indian hockey player Sandeep Singh. Soorma, a comeback story of the hockey legend Sandeep Singh is a biopic that chronicles the life and times of the famed hockey player.Welcome to Shahabad of 1994 – the hockey capital of India. It’s a small town that dreams big.

Young Sandeep Singh (Diljit Dosanjh) was never disciplined enough to play hockey and always ran away when the coach punished him. His elder brother – Vikramjeet (Angad Bedi) – was a stark contrast as he not only trained hard but took beatings on behalf of his sibling. Sandeep’s life changes when he meets Harpreet (Taapsee Pannu), a hockey player who pushes him to focus on bettering his game. While Singh goes on to play for the country, an unfortunate incident leaves him paralyzed. Rest of the movie showcases how he beats all odds to make a grand comeback.

The singer-turned-actor had a great start in Bollywood with Udta Punjab and Phillauri and a performance like this will only increase the number of films he’s offered. Shaad Ali’s narrative goes easy on the theatrics focussing more on the real turn of events, which have enough potential to inspire. Most of the scenes are shot in natural light, giving a realistic feel to the film. Dosanjh’s sensational act along with the inspiring story of Sandeep Singh makes this one a must-watch. Buy your tickets now.
