Mehbooba marks the launch of Akash Puri and Neha Shetty as the leads in a Telugu film. Set against the backdrop of 1971 India-Pak war. The movie is Written and directed by Puri Jagannadh, the music and background score has been rendered by Sandeep Chowta. Quite contrary to Puri Jagannadh’s earlier movies, the male lead in Mehbooba is shown to be a disciplined person.

Roshan (Akash Puri) is an engineering graduate based out of Hyderabad and his goal is to join the Indian Army. Afreen (Neha Shetty) is a girl from Lahore who comes to Hyderabad to pursue her higher studies. Despite being born on different sides of the border, there’s still a past that connects them both. They often recall their past life in dreams. ‘Mehbooba’ is fuelled by absolutely nothing other than the subtle story, with even the actors in the film seemingly coming second to it. Devoid of commercial elements, the film is a raw narrative of a couple who are drawn to each other after being reincarnated.

‘Mehbooba’ is an honest attempt by Puri Jagannadh to make a beautiful film and launch his son Akash Puri, who portrayed his character with ease. Neha makes an impressive debut and looks apt in her role as Afreen. The screenplay is a little loose at places.  However, the film is worth a watch, if only for the honest attempt made for its social message on national integrity and the beautiful chemistry between the lead pair.
