Love Sonia marks the directorial debut of Tabrez Noorani (the producer of Slumdog Millionaire), and also features TV actress Mrunal Thakur who will be making her big-screen debut with this film. The film received critical acclaim at its UK premiere and even bagged the two awards including one for the Best Indie Film at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2018. Love Sonia acknowledges this human spirit of a teen girl, who endures unimaginable brutalities and yet, dares to live.

Belonging to a drought-prone village in India, a debt-ridden farmer (Adil Hussain) grapples with poverty and desperation. Despite the dire circumstances, his daughters, teen sisters Sonia (Mrunal Thakur) and Preeti choose to be happy. But their undying spirit takes a beating when the hapless father decides to sell off Preeti to a local landlord for money. Naïve and hopeful, Sonia sets off to look for her missing sister without anticipating the heinous repercussions. Her search drags her to Mumbai’s dark underbelly and entraps her in the horrific world of sex trade and prostitution.

Love Sonia is a brilliantly told story with a fresh voice for the victims of human trafficking. Mrunal Thakur is definitely a force to reckon with as she plays a vulnerable and tenacious spirit. Richa Chadda brings an important and powerful character to the plot, giving us a performance that is as memorable as Thakur’s. Manoj Bajpayee’s character will make your blood boil with his manipulative and self-serving actions. Freida Pinto is almost unrecognizable as she highlights the effect this world has on the minds of the victims. The movie brings to light a miserable truth and does so unapologetically. Watch the movie for the performances.
