5 Simple Home Remedies to Treat Itchy Scalp

Skin is the largest organ of the body and unfortunately, the most neglected one. Quite some part of it gets covered by the clothes that we wear. But a very sensitive part that is neither fully covered nor fully exposed is the scalp.

Layers of hair do form a protective covering only to some extent. Alas they, in turn, do cause some harm to the scalp as well if not maintained properly. Poor hair care, dry scalp, dandruff constitute some of the common causes of an itchy scalp and fingers in the hair in public can just get too very embarrassing! Here is how you can treat an itchy scalp:

1. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is probably one of the most tried and tested oil across the globe! It produces a barrier between the outside environment and the internal skin thus keeping skin moisturized. Hence it tops the list of things to treat an itchy scalp. Rub some coconut oil onto the scalp just after your hair wash when it is clean. After half an hour use a perfume-free shampoo to wash it out. This remedy done thrice a week should fetch you good results. Alternatively, you may gently heat coconut oil till it melts, then add it to your shampoo for washing your hair.

2. Baking Soda

This easily available home ingredient helps let go the itching sensation through the exfoliation of the scalp and control of dandruff that is triggered by overactive fungi. Add baking soda to water and make paste. Apply this directly onto your scalp. Leave it for 10 to 15 minutes to soak well into your scalp and then rinse properly with water. Rubbing some olive oil on the scalp prior to applying the baking soda paste can deliver best results.

3. Lemon Juice

Lemon possesses acidic property thus balancing the scalp’s pH level. Its anti-fungal properties too, combat dandruff causing fungus. It also contains vitamin C that fights dandruff and promotes a lustrous hair growth. Thoroughly apply fresh lemon juice on the scalp and allow it to settle for five minutes. Then shampoo your hair. Or you can go a little further and add yogurt to the lemon juice and apply this mixture on your scalp. After a few minutes wash hair with a mild shampoo. Repeating this hair care regime on alternate days will treat itchiness completely.

4. Aloe Vera

The gel of Aloe Vera holds moisturizing properties that can relieve excessive itching and dryness. Don’t worry if you don’t get fresh Aloe Vera gel, purchase it in any drug store. Take some aloe vera gel on your fingers and rub it gently onto your itchy scalp. Let it sit for 10 -15 minutes. Then use a mild shampoo to wash your hair.

5. Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil has a molecular structure that resembles the composition of our sebum i.e. our own natural oil, making it a very effective hydrating and rejuvenating agent. So treating an itchy scalp relieves a dry, irritated skin. A few minutes before going to bed, massage some jojoba oil onto your scalp. Leave it overnight. Next morning, gently give your hair a wash using a mild shampoo. Repeating this remedy once in a week will bring about excellent results.

Using all the above methods is sure to get you rid of the itch in your scalp – and thus dandruff and unwanted situations are sure to be twitched! To keep your scalp clear when you step out of your house in the scorching sun use a head scarf to protect your now clean and clear scalp.
