Simple Steps to Determine Your Skin Type

The skin is the largest organ of the body. And it is just as complex as the other organs. To care for your skin the right way, the very first step is to know your skin type.

This is because you may be inadvertently treating it the wrong way and using lotions or cleaners that are completely wrong for having a smooth skin. There are some skin types that are considered the most common and here are some ways to determine which your skin type is.

Visual Examination

This visual test can help you ascertain your skin type easily and follow the right skincare routine. Get up in the morning, wash your face, and go about your work. Around noon, stand in front of a mirror and look at your face. If your face is shinier than in the morning, you have oily skin. If not, it is normal. If the T-zone is shiny, you have combination skin. If it’s dry or red, you have dry/sensitive skin.

Blotting Test

This is a faster method. It can also help you check whether you have oily or dry skin. Pat your skin gently with a blotting paper. Now check it under a light for the amount of oil on it. Little or no oil means dry skin. Too much oil means oily skin. If some oil is from the forehead and nose, you have normal or combination skin. Determining the type of skin you have will help in following the right skincare regimen for a smooth skin. But ensure that you do the test on other parts of the skin like the wrist as it may lead to skin irritation if you have sensitive skin.

Touch Test

This test is quite like the visual test. Get up, wash your face, and go about your daily routine. Come midday and it’s time to test. Some areas of your face and the T-zone feel moist to touch means oily skin. Combination skin is if some portions are moist and some aren’t. If you feel dryness on the face, your skin is dry. If your face feels soft and moisturized, you have normal skin.

Consult a Dermatologist

Another way to determine your skin type is to go to a dermatologist who will perform some tests and check your skin to let you know exactly what type you have. It is always better to seek suggestions or take advice from these professionals regarding the type of products to use if you have sensitive skin. You can also ask them about the right type of skin care regimen to follow.

Check Skin Pores

Pores of the skin are a major indicator of the type. They tend to get clogged when the skin produces far too much oil from large pores, which is mostly in case of oily skin. If the pores are small and tight, it is dry skin. If you can’t see them, you have normal skin. If they are only visible around the nose, you have combination skin.
